This 6-point checklist will help you navigate the aftermath of a collision. Here are a few tips that will help you recover faster. Following the checklist is important for your safety and that of others. It is imperative to have a clear plan before a car crash, so you do not miss anything.

Steps you Should Take Immediately after an Accident

1. Check for Injuries

First thing first you need to check the well-being of yourself and your passengers. If you're injured, call 911 or ask someone else to do so. If injured do not move, and wait for emergency personnel. If you're not too hurt to move, check on the other passengers in your vehicle.

2. Assess Outside of Vehicle

After you have made sure everyone is secure in the vehicle then you can inspect your situation outside of the vehicle. If you're able to, move to the side of the road or a sidewalk. If it can still operate your vehicle safely then try to move it out of traffic.

3. Call Emergency Personnel

No matter the type of accident in most states it is a law to report the incident to the police to create a police report of the public disturbance. This will also come up if you file a claim with your insurer because they will often ask for a copy of the police report to help with the claims process.

4. Exchange Information

After making sure you and any passengers are uninjured and emergency personnel is contacted it is time to exchange contact and insurance information with the other driver.

Full name and phone number

Driver's license and license plate number

Insurance company and policy number

Location and pictures of the accident

5. Personal Documentation

After you exchange information with the other driver you need to gather your documentation of the incident to protect yourself down the road. Keep your record of the information below.  Once the police arrive, get the name and badge number of all responding officers. Ask for a copy of the police report which will include all passengers involved. Also, make sure you take many photos to help support the claims process and speak to as many witnesses to the accident as possible for credibility.

6. Notify Insurance Agency

Notify your insurance agency as soon as possible. Give them a call at the scene to hear what they will need for your claim. If not possible call when in a safe place to speak and provide them with all of the documentation you collected at the accident.
